Setting objectives is the key to successful completion of whatever endeavour you decide to pursue. You need to know where you start, where you want to be at the end, and how you are going to achieve that. Objectives provide a motive, a structure and an aim towards which all activities are directed. Setting objectives for a lesson is essential, as they show what the students are expected to learn, what activities the teacher should use in order to help students meet these objectives, as well as how to assess if the objectives have been achieved. The ABCD model for learning objectives is very useful as it shows clearly what are the four components that the teacher should consider in setting the objectives. Using this model helps define the objectives clearly, so that both the teacher and the students will know what are the desired outcomes of the lesson and whether the lesson was successful. The discussions of our colleagues show that we have all grasped the idea and the structure of the ABCD model, and I believe that even if teachers are obligated to use another format for lesson planning, they will include this model as well.

ReplyDeleteI like your comment about setting objectives because it describes in a nice way how essential it is to have clear objectives in our lesson planning. Objectives provide light to our teaching and, in my opinion, they are like the horizon where we want to take our students. Sometimes we can be ahead of them, or behind them! but how wonderful it is when we are just side by side looking at the same direction and in tune with each other.

Linking up with ABCD approach, detailed objectives protect the teacher's lesson from absurdity. What I like about it is the "structure" itself, which differs from the traditional way. Also, sharing, with your students, an ABCD objective having a degree of mastery makes it easy for them to work toward clear goals and expectations.

ReplyDeletePlanning is not an easy task, and setting objectives for our classes and students can be troublesome. However, we have the fortune to have quite a good number of methodologies available, like the ABCD model.
I like Aleydas's view of objectives, they are the horizon, it's like looking beyond the sea.
